Tuesday night, after taking part in something super duper exciting, but super duper top secret for now Charles and I went with a couple of friends to see Hood To Coast, the movie. Anyone that follows me on Twitter knows I was SO excited about it. First off, we don't go to many movies that aren't geared towards 3 year olds, and secondly I was excited that it was a RUNNING documentary.
Like a big dorks we got there WAY early, expecting a huge crowd. Austin is a big running city, and I had been hearing reports of it selling out across the country. I wanted to make sure we got good seats. Well, we showed up 30 minutes early and the theatre was empty. I was also surprised that there weren't ANY movie posters out. I wanted a few cheesy blog pics next to them. It wasn't until I started watching the pre-show interviews that I grasped how special and unusual it is for a small documentary to make it in theatres at all.
Pre-Show:
The whole pre-show interviews and commentary were (unintentionally) funny. Bart Yasso cracked me up by referring to himself OVER AND OVER again as "a running guy". Of course that's exactly what he is, but it was funny how he slipped it into every sentence. AND I kid you not: At one point he made a joke about himself being a porn star. Seriously funny stuff.
Movie:
The movie followed four Hood to Coast teams along their journey. Some of the teams were funny, like the "Dead Jocks in a Box", whose van had a coffin on top. Other teams pulled at the heart strings, as they experienced the loss of a family member team mate.
I laughed, I cried, and overall I give this movie two thumbs up.
Post-show:
There seemed to be some technical difficulties getting the post-show to stream through. In fact, most of our movie goers left the theater, not realizing it was coming on. We hung around and eventually got to seem some interviews with the runners.
In all honesty, I probably could've done without the post show stuff.
Race:
Going into the theater I made the comment "I bet it's impossible to watch this and NOT want to sign up."
Sure enough, after watching the movie I want to run Hood to Coast. I've been kicking around the idea with some people on twitter.
Anyone interested in running Hood to Coast 2012?
Have you ran a relay? Leave the link in the comments, I'd love to read your recap.
