"Food Rules" and the fair

I recently won a book giveaway from Alexia. The book was Food Rules, by Michael Pollan. Its the follow up book from "In Defense of Food" (which I haven't read).

I'm a voracious reader, but I'll admit that I always skip over the "diet" section in the library. You see, I don't think you need to follow a plan to lose weight and be heatlhy. I think it's pretty simple. (Notice I said SIMPLE, not EASY) --Eat real foods, in an appropriate quantity and move your body. Thats how I have lost 123 pounds (yippee one more down), so that's what I believe in.
I didn't know anything about this book, but when I read the title, "Food Rules" I was a bit turned off. "Really, this guy thinks he can tell people a set of "rules" and then they will be healthy?"

But it was Saturday afternoon and my husband was working the Army booth at our local fair, I decided to load up the kiddo to go visit him. Since the doctor once again reminded me to stay off the foot, I figured I would park myself in a chair and read the book while he worked.

And guess what I found out? The authors conclusion in the first book regarding what food we should eat boiled down to this:

"Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants."

When I read that I seriously said, "YES!" out loud, put away my reservations and quickly read the rest of the book. The book is broken down into 64 "food rules". An example is: "Don't eat anything your great grandmother wouldn't recognize as food." Sounds like common sense, right? But how many of us eat like that?

This book is pretty simple, but very powerful. I highly recommend picking up a copy.

FAIR

And speaking of the fair, here are some pics from the afternoon.

My son is now tall enough to ride the kiddie rides. He was so excited and kept pointing out the rides he wanted to go on. If it was tall and fast he wanted on it.A daredevil at 2? Yep! I had to drag him to the little toddler section with the slow (hopefully safer) rides.

Even with the kiddie rides, I was feeling pretty nervous. So I hopped on the flying elephants with him. (which were very obviously not designed for adults)

We're supposed to go back out there today and I'm wondering... .I make him wear a helmet when riding a bike... can't I make him wear one on carnival rides?

What food "rules" do you live by?
