FIBER:
We all know the benefits of fiber, right? It normalizes bowel movements, helps lower cholesterol, helps control blood sugar and even aids in weight loss. All very good things.
I will admit, I don't monitor my daily fiber intake. I eat a diet full of fresh fruits, veggies, whole grains and legumes. I'm pretty confident I naturally get what I need.
I'm going to preface these two reviews by saying it is my personal opinion that getting fiber though eating a balanced diet is the best way to go. However, if that's difficult for you then here are a few products to help you out.
I was sent some Gnu Bars to try out and review. Each bar is between 130-140 calories, made from whole grains, vegan and most importantly has 12g of fiber per bar. That is close to 50% of the daily recommended intake of fiber.
They come in several flavors like Lemon Ginger, Chocolate Brownie, Cinnamon Raisin, Banana Walnut and Peanut Butter. CLICK HERE to check out their full line up. I sent a few of these bars to my mother to help with this review. She is very interested in her fiber intake and was excited about these bars.
My mother enjoyed all of the bars with the exception of the Lemon Ginger bar. It was too "zingy" in her words. Her favorite bar was the Expresso Chip Bar. She found all of them to be very filling. My 2 year old has also been eating these bars. His favorite is the Chocolate Brownie (big surprise). In fact, he enjoys them all so much that I have put them up as special treats. I will say... .they make him very... .regular. They are very dense bars, you can certainly tell they are "fiber bars", but that's not necessarily a bad thing because they still taste good.
Overall, I found them to be a convenient source of tasty fiber. Something nice to keep in the glove box in case I'm out and need a snack. CLICK HERE to check them out for yourself.
The other company that sent me products is Fiber Gourmet. They make low calorie, high fiber pasta and cracker snacks.
I had heard a lot of good reviews about their Lite Cheese Snacks and was very excited to try them, being a former fan of Cheez Its. They have 8g of fiber and 50 calories per serving which is 1/2 the calories of the leading cheese snack cracker (Cheez Its). However, I was a bit underwhelmed by these crackers. I found them too bland. But I'm not a huge fan of "low calorie" recreations of high calorie food. I prefer to just eat the real thing... in moderation.
Their pasta however, blew me away. I LOVE it. Can you hear my enthusiasm?
I think pasta is often looked at simply as a way to mop up sauce. However, good pasta actually has a flavor to it and this pasta tasted great! We ate the Rotini with just a little olive oil and garlic on it. I seriously think it would've been a shame to cover the pasta with sauce.
It has 130 calories per serving which according to the box is, 40% fewer than the average pasta serving. And it has 18g of fiber per serving. You can order it online or CLICK HERE to find it in a store near you.
